This course will focus on Shakespeare's history plays, which will be discussed in the wider cultural and political context of Elizabethan England. The first part will concentrate on the use, transmission and representation of Shakespeare's texts, and will be followed by three thematic clusters devoted respectively to the analysis of 1-2 Henry IV, Henry V and Richard III.

Il modulo prenderà in esame alcune delle maggiori manifestazioni della cultura romantica in lingua inglese, proponendo percorsi di lettura nella produzione in poesia e in prosa del periodo, che privilegeranno le figure di William Blake, William Wordsworth, S. T. Coleridge, George Gordon Byron, Mary Shelley.

Il modulo propone un percorso nella storia letteraria e culturale inglese del Cinque e Seicento, passandone in rassegna i principali autori e movimenti attraverso la presentazione, analisi e commento di testi significativi.

ll corso è inteso come introduzione ai primi sviluppi del romanzo inglese e dei sottogeneri nei quali si articola. La prospettiva adottata privilegia la scrittura femminile, con particolare attenzione alle opere di Aphra Behn, Charlotte Lennox, Fanny Burney, Maria Edgeworth.

This course is meant as an introduction to early modern English literature and culture. Offering a survey of significant authors, it aims at providing the essential critical tools for the appreciation of a variety of early modern texts ranging from poetry to drama and prose, and for the discussion of their relationship with the historical, political and social context of the time.

Obiettivi: il modulo intende passare in rassegna esempi significativi delle maggiori tendenze della narrativa britannica dal secondo dopoguerra ad oggi. Programma: tradizionalismo e sperimentazione dagli anni '50 agli anni '70 (il magistero di F.R. Leavis; John Fowles, Doris Lessing, David Lodge); il romanzo degli anni '80 e la storia (Salman Rushdie e Graham Swift); gli anni ''0 e la pratica della riscrittura (Antonia Byatt e Marina Warner); la scrittura femminile (da Iris Murdoch a Angela Carter).

Destinazione del modulo: I e II anno della laurea specialistica in Lingue, Letterature e Civiltà dellEuropa e delle Americhe IV anno di Lingua e Letteratura inglese del corso di studio quadriennale in Lingue e Letterature Straniere.
Contenuti del modulo: il modulo prenderà in esame la seconda tetralogia storica shakespeariana e ne discuterà le valenze culturali e politiche allinterno del panorama dellInghilterra elisabettiana.
