Dear students,
Welcome to the first-year course in English Linguistics. It is a pleasure to have you with us as we begin an introduction to the structure and sound system of the English language.
This module will provide a foundation in phonology, the branch of linguistics concerned with the systematic organisation of sounds in language. You will explore how the sounds of English are produced, how they interact and form patterns, and how they contribute to meaning.
Over the course of the term, we will examine key phonological concepts such as phonemes, stress, intonation, and syllable structure, and develop analytical tools to investigate the English sound system in a structured and rigorous way.
I look forward to working with you and supporting your engagement with the subject.
With best wishes,
Laura Tommaso
